Layla (Unplugged)

“Layla” is a song written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon, originally released by their blues rock band Derek and the Dominos, as the thirteenth track from their only studio album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (November 1970). Its contrasting movements were supposedly composed separately by Clapton and Gordon. The piano part has also been controversially credited to Rita Coolidge, Gordon’s girlfriend at the time.

Inspired by Clapton’s unrequited love for Pattie Boyd, then the wife of his friend and fellow musician George Harrison, the song features guitar chords by Eric Clapton and Duane Allman; its famous two contrasting parts were composed separately by Eric Clapton and drummer Jim Gordon.

In 1992, Clapton accepted MTV’s invitation to record an MTV Unplugged, a live acoustic album. This Unplugged album was filled with previous hits, along with a new song called “Tears in Heaven.” The album included an acoustic version of “Layla.” Among the most notable arrangements of the song are its slowing down, the removal of the piano, and the arrangement of the main riff.
