“Under the Bridge” is the second single released by the American band Red Hot Chili Peppers from their 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik. It remains the band’s most successful single, reaching number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1992.
As with Blood Sugar Sex Magik, “Under the Bridge” received universally positive critical reception. Amy Hanson of Allmusic said the song “…has become an integral part of the 1990s alternative scene, and remains one of the purest diamonds to glitter among the rich depths of funk that dominated the Peppers’ work.”
“Under the Bridge” was among the few songs the band wrote and completed before moving into the mansion where they recorded the album. Later, when the song was recorded, Rubin felt the grand, epic outro would benefit from a large group of singers. Frusciante’s mother, Gail, joined in the choir along with her friends.
